Holocaust Remembrance Day, 2023
Special message from the Institute for Black Solidarity with Israel (IBSI)
April 17-18 is the 2023 Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah). It is also a great time to remember Black solidarity with our Jewish brothers and sisters and the stand against hatred and extremist violence everywhere. The quote above is from Dr. King's 1963 Letter from Birmingham Jail where he was incarcerated for civil disobedience.
Here is more context:
We can never forget that everything Hitler did in Germany was "legal" and everything the Hungarian freedom fighters did in Hungary was "illegal." It was "illegal" to aid and comfort a Jew in Hitler's Germany. But I am sure that if I had lived in Germany during that time, I would have aided and comforted my Jewish brothers even though it was illegal. If I lived in a Communist country today where certain principles dear to the Christian faith are suppressed, I believe I would openly advocate disobeying these anti-religious laws.
At the Institute for Black Solidarity with Israel (IBSI), this is our commitment every day. We remember the six million Jews who perished under Nazi rule and fight against the injustices that seek to threaten Israel and the Jewish people today. We do this as we also fight against the Christian genocide in Nigeria and the slavery in Libya. We will also continue to strengthen the Black-Jewish/Africa-Israel Alliance. We will do all of this with your help.
